The “Your Baby Can Read” program actually does work! My son is a graduante of the program and he is an exceptionally good reader for his age. We started using the program when he was about nine months old since my dad purchased it for us. I would have him watch the DVD’s once or twice a day, but usually only once. He enjoyed the music and songs in the DVD’s. The program had about six different levels of DVD’s and you started with the first and after your child started to understand it (which usually took about a month), then you would progress on to the next one. He would start to recognize the word as soon as it appeared on the screen. You see, they would flash a word on the screen, then a voice would say the word two times, and then they would show a picture of the word or a skit of a baby or child acting out the word.

There is a ton of controversy over the “Your Baby Can Read” program. Many parents out there feel as though it is just a form of memorization. The fact is, it is a form of memorization. But so is the alphabet when you think about it. I mean, how do you learn the letters if not for the ABC song? If kids did not learn how to memorize anything, then how the heck would they learn anything. So yes, the program does teach memorization, but it also teaches reading. The way they present each word is the proof. They show the word on the screen in big, bold letters with great colors. Then, as the voice is pronouncing the word, they underline the letters in the word which reinforces phonics. In my opinion, it is a perfectly good way for kids to start learning. My son learned his colors, many different types of common objects, and also verbs.

I believe the program is a great supplement to teaching your child to read. In addition to the “Your Baby Can Read” program, we also read to our son constantly. We read books in the morning, books in the afternoon, and books before he went to bed. We even read books in the bath! He started to memorize the words in the books and when we would start reading to him, he would then take over and read the rest himself. Kids these days need to enter Kindergarten with a strong foundation to start their education, I think that using the “Your Baby Can Read” program is a great way to give them a solid advantage over the other kids in their class. We didn’t even use the entire program which includes flash cards in addition to the DVD set. We only used the DVD’s and still, our son did very well by using the DVD’s alone. I would totally recommend buying the DVD’s for your son or daughter and if you don’t have the money to buy the DVD’s yourself, see if your public library has them available for borrowing. You will be glad you took the time to do something positive for your child and the time they spend watching the DVD’s (20 minutes per DVD) is time that you will be able to spend doing things such as cleaning the kitchen or picking up toys in the family room. Your home will benefit from this program too! But the best benefit is seeing the joy in your child’s face when he or she is able to pick up a favorite book and read it cover to cover.
