Professional Baby Photography

Professional baby photography is something that I think every parent should do for their baby when they are a newborn. Choosing a professional baby photographer is easier than you think. I would start by asking friends who have recently had babies who did their baby pictures. Most of my friends have professional baby pictures taken so that they can create baby announcements using the pictures. A lot of people tend to do the cute newborn pictures where the baby is naked except for a diaper and they have a cute knit hat on. That is what I decided to do for our first and our second baby. For our first baby we hired a person to do professional baby photography at our house. She came and set up her equipment right in our kitchen near our sliding glass door. The glass door gave off lots of natural sunlight which our photographer thought was great for the pictures. She used a small table we had in the kitchen to put our baby on and then she started taking the photos. This photographer came prepared with lots of different props. She started by wrapping our son up like a burrito in a cute swaddle blanket with a polka dot print. Then she put an adorable brown knit hat on him which had cute bear ears on it. He looked so incredibly adorable. The photos she took were gorgeous and we got tons of compliments on them. We ended up buying way too many pictures but we could not choose – we had to have them all.

When our son was eighteen months old, his grandfather bought us a DSLR camera for Christmas. We started taking our own pictures with it, but they were not as good as the ones that the professional photographer took. Sometimes we would get a few that were really good but we would have to take tons of pictures to get a few good ones. Then I signed up for a photography class to learn more about taking good pictures. I learned some of the fundamentals of picture taking and learned some of the functions of my camera other than just automatic. From there I started practicing by taking pictures of our son. I got good pretty quickly. But still not as good as a professional baby photographer.

When our daughter came along, I knew we wanted to do some professional baby photography with her, but I did not want to spend the same amount of money we did with our son. So I knew I had to find another photographer who was just as talented, but less expensive. I was lucky that my brother’s friend had started a baby photography business earlier that year, so I emailed him to see if he would do our daughter’s pictures. He said he would and that he also could do some maternity pictures for us. I never thought to do maternity pictures, but was glad that he offered. He came out to our house when I was about 8 months pregnant and shot some outdoor photos for us. Then, when our baby was born the following month, he came over to our house and did some indoor photos of our newborn baby girl. I had ordered a knit hat for her as well as a knit diaper cover to match. That was a cute picture. I helped the photographer to pose her and that was hard work. She would often uncurl from the pose and we would have to curl her back up again. But we got some great pictures and I’m glad we did professional baby photography with that particular photographer because he was very good and those memories will last a lifetime.
