The best baby monitors on the market right now are the video monitors. Video monitors allow the parents to have a real-time view of their baby at all times and that view is coupled with sound and sometimes lights. The top of the line video baby monitors have the ability to let you add up to three cameras to the monitor, so that if you have more children, you can add a camera to each of their rooms so that you can see them on the monitor all at the same time! Video monitors can be expensive, but they are totally worth it. I thought I would get addicted to looking at our video monitor, but I did not. Well, maybe in the beginning I did. But over time I would put it down and only look at it occasionally.

Mounting a video monitor camera can be challenging, as you want to choose the best angle at which to point the camera so that you can see your baby clearly on the screen. My husband mounted ours for me and he did so in the corner of the room – the corner farthest and opposite from our son’s crib. Once it was installed, we turned it on to try it out. It was fun to be able to see him for the first time going to sleep. He would roll around and his head would end up at the foot of the crib, but he was able to fall asleep easily and he had no idea that we were being entertained by him falling asleep.

The first video monitor we purchased worked really well for awhile – about two or three weeks. I liked that it was small – about the size of a cell phone – and that it had a kick-stand to put it up on the counter and also a clip in case you were moving around the house and wanted to clip it to your belt. I never did clip it to my belt, but it was nice to have that option available. So it worked for awhile, but then all of a sudden we would be looking at the monitor and it would lose the picture. The sound would still be there, but the picture would just disappear. I called the company to complain about it and ask how we could fix it and they called me back the next day. They said that it probably was interfering with either our cordless phones or our wireless internet router. They told us to change the channel of the wireless internet router which my husband did. But that did not solve the problem. The picture kept cutting out and it was so annoying. We weren’t going to get rid of our phones or our wireless internet, so instead we took the monitor back to the store. We were lucky that Babies R Us would accept the return because I had thrown the monitor’s box away. But they did take it back and gave us store credit on a gift card. I ended up using the gift card to buy other baby stuff because we ended up buying our next video monitor on Amazon.com at the recommendation of a friend.

We decided on the Uniden video monitor and bought one on Amazon. It is not marketed as a baby video monitor, but it certainly can be used as one. And it has the ability to add up to three additional cameras, which means you can monitor up to four rooms at one time. If you do this, the screen displays each room on a two by two grid. We just had another baby so we will definitely be buying an additional camera soon!
